Car Hire Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most from UK car hire customers.

Can I rent a car if I'm under 25 or over 70?

Yes, absolutely.

However, requirements may vary depending on the car supplier and destination country. The car supplier may also have a minimum age limit of 21 years old for rentals.

Can I rent a car with a provisional driving licence?

Can I rent a car with a provisional driving licence?

No, unfortunately the car rental suppliers we are working with do not accept provisional driving licences.

You must hold a full driving licence to hire a car.

Is it sufficient to present a copy of my driving licence?

Unfortunately, a copy of your licence will not be accepted at the rental desk. You will need to present the original document at pick-up.

If your licence was lost or stolen and you have already booked a car rental through us, we recommend that you either request a name change on the reservation to someone traveling with you, or cancel the reservation if this is not an option. If you change the name of the main driver, the new driver will need to present all the mandatory documents in their own name at the rental desk.

If you need to change the name urgently with less than 72 hours, please contact us through our live chat option and we will try to assist you straight away.

Do I need an international driving licence?

We recommend that you check the licence requirements for your specific booking to determine whether you will require an international driving licence or not.

If your licence is not printed in the Latin alphabet (i.e. Arabic, Greek, Russian) you will almost always need an international driving licence.

If an international driving licence is required for your booking, you will also be required to bring your domestic licence with you to present it along with your international driving licence.

What do I need to pick up the car?

The following may need to be presented at the rental desk:

1. Credit card with enough funds to cover the excess (debit cards usually not accepted).

2. The main driver's original licence, physical licence, held for a minimum of one year (some suppliers may require longer, please check your terms and conditions).

3. Additional photo ID.

4. Your digital car hire voucher.

5. Any other documentation specified on your booking voucher.

There might be some differences in documentation required based on where you are renting and which supplier you are renting with. Make sure to check your rental conditions for your specific rental. All required documentation needs to be in the main driver's name.

Why do I need to enter my flight details?

If you are picking up from an airport location, we recommend that you enter your flight arrival number during the booking process along with the driver details in order to help the supplier track your flight.

In the event of unexpected changes to your flight times, they may hold the car for you outside of your pick-up time, as long as it is still within opening hours.

If you already have a booking, you can add or update your flight number on the Manage Booking section of our website by navigating to the 'Jump to' section and selecting Flight Number and adding/editing the flight details.

If your flight number is not added to the booking or you experience delays during travel, please contact the car rental provider directly on the desk telephone number on your voucher to see if they can accommodate you.

Will Brexit affect bookings?

Generally, UK photo card licence holders will not need an International Driving Permit (IDP) in order to drive in the EU/EEA after Brexit. However, you may be required to have an international licence in addition to your UK domestic license to hire a car in certain EU/EEA countries if:

-You do not hold a photo card licence (i.e. you have a paper licence).

-Your licence was issued in Isle of Man, Jersey, Guernsey, or Gibraltar.

You can easily obtain an IDP at your local UK post office. You can read more about driving in the EU after Brexit as a UK licence holder here.

Are there additional charges for mileage?

If you have limited mileage in your booking and exceed the included mileage limit, there will be additional costs charged by the supplier per km/mile. To avoid unexpected mileage charges, always double check your mileage allowance. For the best mileage option we recommend going with unlimited mileage to avoid any extra costs.

For details on your mileage allowance, please refer to your mileage policy on your booking.

Are there any cross-border charges?

Cross-border policy refers to additional charges or restrictions on trips that will take place across multiple countries/states etc. Cross-border policies and charges can vary between suppliers, so take this potential cost into account when choosing the supplier for your trip.

For more details please refer to the cross-border policy on your booking.

Can I change the fuel policy?

Yes, your current fuel policy can be changed by logging into the Manage Booking section of our website. Fuel policy is tied to the specific booking chosen, so you will need to select a different option in order to change the fuel policy. Use the 'Jump to' section and select 'Your Car', use the edit option to run the search again, and you can change to an option with a different fuel policy.

If the price of the new option is higher or lower than your original booking, the difference will be charged or refunded.

Can I request an automatic car?

Yes. When making a booking, you can use our search filters on the left hand side to display cars with 'Automatic Transmission' only.

Please note that outside of the US and Canada, car rental suppliers may have limited availability of automatic cars.

Do you offer Adapted and Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles?

If you require an adapted or wheelchair accessible vehicle, we advise that you contact the car hire supplier directly in order to ensure that they are able to accommodate your needs. These vehicles may need to be reserved in advance.

Supplier's contact details are available on your booking voucher, or through their website directly.

How do I find out about the luggage capacity of a vehicle?

During your online booking, each vehicle option will include both the person and luggage capacity for the car category beneath the picture. Please bear in mind that the luggage capacity listed refers to small cabin-size pieces of luggage.

Will I get the exact car model displayed during the booking?

While we guarantee that you will receive a car in the same category that you booked, we cannot guarantee the exact make or model. This means that you can trust that the car you receive will have the same type of transmission, number of doors, and passenger and bag capacity that is displayed at the time of booking and printed on your voucher.

We will endeavour to provide you with the requested make/model, however, the exact car model you will receive will depend on availability in the rental supplier's fleet at the time of collection.

Can I place more than one booking at a time?

Unfortunately, you are unable to book two cars during the same booking process, as each vehicle booked has its own reference number and rental agreements.

If you have booked several vehicles on the same date with a single car hire company, bookings must be made under different driver's names. As long as you book each vehicle separately, you can book as many rentals at a time as you want.

How do I get a VAT invoice?

As we are not the service provider, we are unfortunately not able to provide a VAT invoice. If you require a VAT invoice, please check with the car rental company your booking is with to see if they can provide this for you.

How much will I need to pay for fuel?

The fuel policy is determined by the car rental supplier and vary between different options and locations. Here is an overview of the most common fuel policies:

Full to full:

You'll receive the car with a full tank of fuel and leave a deposit. As long as you return the car with a full tank of fuel, you'll get the deposit back. If you don't return the car full, you'll be charged for missing fuel and a refuelling fee.

Same to same:

Your vehicle will be supplied with fuel and you need to return the car with the same amount of fuel. You may be required to leave a fuel deposit reserved on your credit card that will be released when you return your car with the required amount of fuel. Missing fuel will be charged on your return.

Pre-Purchase with partial refund:

Your car will be provided with a full tank of fuel for which you will need to leave a deposit at the rental desk. Upon return of the car you will be refunded for the unused fuel, but you will be charged a mandatory admin fee. The admin fee is non-refundable regardless of the amount of fuel upon return.

Prepaid Fuel:

You pay for a full tank of fuel when you pick up the car, and you can return the car empty. However, you are usually not refunded for fuel you don't use and the fuel is usually charged at a higher than normal rate.

I haven't received my booking confirmation?

The majority of our bookings are confirmed within 48 hours. If you haven't received a confirmation within 48 hours, please check if the email has been filtered into your spam folder.

You can also view your booking online by logging into the Manage Booking section of our website.

In the unlikely event that your booking is not confirmed within 48 hours, we will contact you to try and find an alternative option.

What is Strong Customer Authentication (SCA)?

What is Strong Customer Authentication (SCA)?

3D Secure authentication can be requested by your bank to confirm the identity of the card holder of the credit card. Due to European regulation PSD2 this has become more common in an effort to make online payments more secure.

How can I successfully complete SCA?

If an authentication is needed, you will be redirected to where you will need to complete the authentication. There are different ways for banks to verify the identity of the cardholder, the most common way is a one-time passcode sent via SMS or a password request.

What should I do if I fail the SCA?

We recommend that you contact your bank for advice on how to activate and use 3D secure. This process is managed by your bank for security reasons.

When will I have to pay for the rental?

The majority of our bookings are prepaid, meaning you pay the rental cost when you make the booking. For prepaid reservations you will sometimes have the option to pay a small non-refundable deposit when booking, with the rest of the payment taken before pick-up. You can check when the remaining balance is due for your booking in the Price Summary when you log in on the Manage Booking page.

In some locations we also offer bookings where part of the payment is made to us and the rest is paid directly to the supplier at pick up, and some where the full payment is made at pick up.

Even if your rental cost is prepaid, some charges may be paid directly to the desk on arrival, but they will be included in your total rental cost. These could include one-way fees, young or senior driver fees or in some cases local taxes. More information about the payment specifics of your booking can be found in the Price Summary and on your voucher.

Which costs are included in the rental price?

Through our booking engine, all mandatory charges that apply to your specific booking are included in the rate shown online or outlined in your Terms and Conditions.

It is important to select the correct pick-up and drop-off details, as well as indicate the main driver's age in order to have potential additional charges included in the total rate.

Remember that there will be a security deposit required at the rental desk when you pick up the car, and in some cases an additional deposit for fuel - so make sure that the main driver has enough funds for the required deposit amount for your specific car hire.

There may be additional charges if you don't present the required documentation at the desk, have insufficient funds for the deposit/excess, or opt for extra products such as child seats, additional drivers, GPS, cross border, supplier's insurance and/or a prepaid fuel option.

How can I add a(n) additional driver(s)?

You can add an additional driver in the second step of the booking process when making the booking online. If you already have a booking and need to add an additional driver, don't worry. Just inform the agent at the desk when you are picking up the car, and they will be able to sort this out for you.

The person who is being added as an additional driver will always need to be present at the rental desk with their full valid licence(s) in order to be added to the rental agreement.

If additional drivers are added at the rental desk an extra cost will be added at the pick-up time. The exception is if you have a free additional driver included in the cost of your booking. The additional driver will still need to be present and added at the desk, but you will not need to pay for it.

How can I add a child seat?

You can request a child seat as an 'optional extra' during the online booking process. If you already have a booking, go to the Manage Booking section of our website. Use the 'Jump to' section and select 'Extras', then select the specific child seat you want from the Extras section. If you don't get the option to add a child seat, we recommend that you contact the rental company directly to address this.

Many airlines will allow you to bring child seats with you for free, so it could be worth looking into bringing your own child seat if you wish to avoid the cost of renting one.

When will I be charged for optional extras?

Although you can add optional extras during the booking process online, or through the Manage Booking section on an existing booking, the optional extras are usually paid at the rental desk when you pick up your car.

In some cases, optional extras such as a GPS or additional driver may be included in the rental cost. In these cases you will not be charged at the desk for these items. If optional extras are included in the price, this will be indicated during the booking process and under the included section on your booking voucher.

Which optional extras are available?

The most common optional extras that you can request with your booking are child seats, additional drivers or a GPS. Suppliers may also offer other products that are specific to the area or season. Some examples of these include an electronic toll pass, snow chains, ski or luggage racks etc.

Optional extras can be requested when you make your booking online or added to an exisiting booking through the Manage Booking section of our website. To add optional extras to an already exisiting booking: Log in, use the 'Jump to' section and select 'Extras' to manage your extras for that booking.

Optional extras are managed by and paid directly to the car rental company when you pick up your car and are subject to availability.

As prices are live and subject to availability, prices may increase closer to your pick-up date.

If the price of the new option is higher or lower than your original booking, the difference will be charged or refunded.

You can change your booking through the Manage Booking section of our website. Once logged in, 'Jump to' section, to go to the respective sections you want. Here you can request a name change, add optional extras, change vehicle, dates, times or location, as well as update your flight number.

Changes are based on availability. After pick-up, changes to your booking will not be possible.

No additional charges are applied to changes up until 48 or 24 hours, depending on your amendment policy, prior to pick-up. However, prices are subject to changes due to live pricing.

Any funds you have already paid for your car hire will be transferred to the new booking during any rebooking process. You will only be charged or refunded the difference in price.

If you don't get the option to add a child seat, we recommend that you contact the rental company directly to address this.

How can I change the main driver?

You can change the main driver by going to the Manage Booking section of our website. Log in, use the 'Jump to' section and select 'Main Driver Details', use the 'Edit Driver Name' to change/edit the main driver.

Please note that in some cases we will need to rebook your existing booking and make a new one in order to change the name. If that is the case, we will contact you. As rebooks are subject to availability rebooking may affect the price. Any major changes made to your booking (driver name, date/time etc.) within your specific cancellation period will be subject to an additional charge.

How can I change the pick-up or drop-off location?

You can change your pick-up or drop-off location by going to the Manage Booking section of our website. Log in, Use the 'Jump to' section and select 'Pick-up Location', use the 'Edit' option to amend date or location. Changes are possible up to your pick-up time, but are subject to availability. Any major changes made to your booking (pick-up/drop-off location, driver name etc.) within your specific cancellation period will be subject to an additional charge, please refer to your booking's cancellation period.

If you change the pick-up or drop-off location, it is likely that the price will change as a new booking needs to be created through the rebooking process. Any payment you have already made will be transferred to the new booking and you will be either charged or refunded the difference.

As prices are live and subject to availability, prices may increase closer to your pick-up date.

If you cancel less than 24 or 48 hours before your pick-up time, an additional fee will apply as stated in your cancellation policy. For more information on your cancellation options, please see the booking terms and conditions.

If you had additional insurance on your booking, this will cancel automatically when you cancel your car hire.

What is your cancellation and no-show policy?

What is your cancellation policy?

The cancellation policy and administration charge can vary depending on the car rental supplier and cancellation option you have chosen. Please read your cancellation and no-show policy before proceeding with a booking to make sure you are happy with the option.

Remember that cancellations and changes are not possible once the pick-up time has passed on the booking. This applies to all bookings.

What is your cancellation policy for fully prepaid or part-paid bookings?

If you cancel up to 24 hours (in some cases 48 hours) prior to your pick-up, in almost all circumstances you will be refunded in full.

If you cancel less than 24 hours (in some cases 48 hours) in advance, in almost all circumstances you'll receive a full refund minus the administration charge outlined in your terms and conditions. Refunds are processed within 20 working days.

Applies to all bookings:

If your online payment is less than the stated administration charge, no refund will be made for your car hire booking if you cancel your booking when the administration charge applies.

If your booking is made less than 24 hours (in some cases 48 hours) before pick-up, the cancellation policy will automatically apply to your booking.

All cancellations should be made on our Manage Booking section, and not with the car hire company directly. Should you agree to cancel directly with the car hire company on arrival, you must also inform us of this change to your booking before your pick-up time for cancellation to be possible. If you do not cancel directly with us more than 24/48 hours before the scheduled time of pick-up but have cancelled with the car hire company, no refund will be issued.

Amending your booking or cancelling optional extras may not be possible less than 24 hours before pick-up.

What is the cancellation policy of your additional insurance product?

If you purchased an additional insurance product with your car hire the policy will be automatically cancelled if you cancel your car hire booking.

What is your No-Show Policy?

No refunds will be given for customers who do not show up for their bookings, customers unable to pick up their vehicle because they do not have the required documentation will also be considered 'no-show's' and will not be entitled to a refund.

The car hire company reserves the right to refuse a car to any customer who fails to arrive on time with all necessary documentation and a credit card with enough available funds for the car's security deposit. In such cases, the customer will not be entitled to a refund.

What is an Excess?

The Excess is the amount that you are liable to pay if your rental car is damaged or stolen.

If you have a Collision Damage Waiver, Theft Waiver and Third Party Liability included in your booking, there will most likely still be an excess. In these cases, the excess is the amount you are liable for if there is damage or theft to the rental car during your rental.

When you go to pick up your car, the car rental company will place a hold of funds for the excess amount on the main driver's credit card as a deposit in case of damage. This hold will be removed when the car is returned with no new damage, but the amount could take a few days to be available in your account.

In the event your rental car is damaged or stolen during your rental period, the amount needed to cover this will be taken from your held excess funds. This amount will not be refunded if you have only chosen Limited insurance cover.

How do I find my excess amount?

To check the excess amount for the car you are interested in renting, please read the Terms and Conditions for the specific rental.

If you already have a booking, your excess is outlined in your rental conditions and on your voucher, both of which can be accessed through the Manage Booking section of our website.

What insurance is included with my car rental?

What is covered:

A European car rental will include the following insurance cover which is arranged by the car rental company:

Third Party Liability

Collision Damage Waiver

Cover Against Theft

What's not covered?

The car rental company will typically take a security deposit on your credit card, if your vehicle is damaged or stolen they will deduct the Excess amount from your deposit.

How can I cover myself against this risk?

You can purchase an Excess Reimbursement insurance policy - with this cover you will be refunded your excess in the event of a claim and also includes a wide range of additional benefits*. If applicable to you, this can be purchased through the Manage Booking section of our website.

*Please note: subject to terms & conditions of the individual insurance policy

How Does an Excess Reimbursement insurance policy work?

To explain what Excess Cover is, it's important to understand what an 'excess' is. Please see our 'What is an Excess' FAQ for more information.

The excess amount will be determined by the rental company and can vary according to where you live, your destination, your age and the type of vehicle you're renting. If your rental vehicle is damaged during your rental period, you're liable to pay the excess amount to cover the cost of damage and repairs. However, if you purchase an Excess Reimbursement policy, this will reimburse the excess you paid in the event of damage occurring, as well as including a wide range of additional benefits*.

*Please note: subject to terms & conditions of the individual insurance policy

What if the rental company tries to sell me one of their products?

When you get to the rental counter, the rental company may offer you additional insurance policies or offer a product that will reduce your security deposit.

If they do, remember:

If you have already purchased an Excess Reimbursement Policy this will cover you for:

An Excess refund for the amount taken from your security deposit in the event of damage or theft.

The policy also has a wide range of additional benefits including:

Cover for your Personal Belongings

Roadside and Towing

Misfuelling Cover

You will not need to purchase additional Excess Reimbursement insurance at the desk, if you have chosen to purchase Excess Reimbursement cover before pick-up.

*Insurance cover is subject to policy terms and conditions which can be accessed through the Manage Booking section of our website.

What if the Rental Company says that my Excess Reimbursement Policy will not work on their car?

Insurance FAQs for US and MX Residents

*Insurance cover is subject to policy terms and conditions which can be accessed through the Manage Booking section of our website.

US Citizens- Do I require proof of insurance to pick up my vehicle?

You will require proof of your Collision Damage Waiver from your Third Party Insurance provider (e.g. Credit Card provider, Third Party Insurance Supplier) when you pick up your vehicle depending on the supplier's policy. Please refer to the supplier rental conditions for your booking to check this, you will not be able to pick up your vehicle without proof of cover.

US Citizens- What is the basic insurance cover and what is included with it?
Option 1

Allianz/Mondial collision damage Protection up to $75K (Pays up to $75,000 with $0 deductible), if eligible, will be available for you to add to your booking.

Option 2

Your credit card may provide you with insurance cover on car rentals. However, not all credit cards will provide this cover so you will need to confirm with your card supplier whether you are eligible for this insurance coverage. If you are eligible for this cover please be advised there will be requirements with this cover that you will be subject to i.e. you will need to provide a letter from your credit card supplier confirming cover, your car rental must be booked with this credit card etc.

Please note that you will be required to leave a deposit at the start of your rental, based on your rental terms and conditions.

Option 3

You may be able to purchase a Collision Damage Waiver (Loss damage waiver) or insurance cover at the car rental desk upon collection of the vehicle. Please note that this is a product that is offered directly from the supplier. For any further information please contact the supplier directly.

MX Rentals- Is there anything I should be aware of with the basic insurance cover if I'm renting in Mexico?

If you are renting in Mexico, your basic insurance cover will not include any CDW (Collision Damage Waiver Insurance). The CDW is usually purchased by customers that are not covered for vehicle damage or loss by their Credit Card Company (or insurance linked to a credit card).

Please be advised that a deposit is mandatory to leave at the desk even if you take out any insurance cover. Please refer to your T&C's in regard to this deposit to ensure you have the funds available for pick-up.

Insurance documents required at pick-up*:

1. A letter from your credit card provider/bank confirming proof of cover signed and stamped by the credit card provider/bank to prove that it is a valid document.

2. This letter needs to be addressed to the supplier and not to the partner (e.g. Hertz not Volaris)

3. This letter needs to be dated before the start of the rental period.

*Please read the Terms and Conditions for the specific rental

My rental car was damaged/in poor condition at pick-up - what should I do?

We recommend that you check the car for damage before leaving the car pick-up location. Any existing damage should be marked on the sign out sheet when you pick up the car, check the car for damage and notify an attendant of any damage that is not marked on the sheet.

However, you are usually not refunded for fuel you don't use and the fuel is usually charged at a higher than normal rate
